Danville, VA - Danville has had its share of construction with the Robertson Bridge and Park Avenue, but the end is in sight.

VDOT representatives say the three week project at Park Avenue will hopefully will be done with construction Tuesday night. But they still have to wait on configuring the lights, which could be as late as Thursday.

Barrels have replaced cars on Park Avenue for the past three weeks. And while detours can be frustrating for drivers, difficult access to parking can be downright depressing for business.

"It's a little congested but it's getting better," said Bracken Jones, a driver.

"I think it's really affecting our business financially and it's affecting our customers because sometimes there is really no way to get in," said Tonya Sims, an employee at Coachman Cleaners.

Coachman Cleaners sits in the middle of the construction, and they blame road work on every parking entrance for their empty racks, their need to cut store hours and their lower bottom line.

"One day I didn't get my first customer until 3:30 and I come in at 8:30 in the morning," said Sims.

Next door, the Gingerbread House also feels the pain. They say the construction crews set up detour signs, which helped their problem, but didn't solve it.

"Local people still have figured out how to get here. People who come from out of town, less frequently, have gotten very confused," said Brian Hamlett, manager of Gingerbread House.

Now that Park Avenue will open again, stores anticipate business to be back to normal.

"I think it is going to make a huge difference, people are not going to have to take the detour...make it more inviting to come back," said Hamlett.

VDOT says that the bridge work will be complete by September. For the Gingerbread House, it's just in time for their biggest retail season: Christmas time.
