Former Heritage coach Doug Smith is in his first year at Appomattox after Ben Martin left for E.C. Glass. "Every time a new coaching staff comes in there's adjustments and the kids and the community have been great to accept us," Smith said.
A season ago Appomattox completed an impressive 9-1 regular season before bowing out to Wilson Memorial in the second round of the playoffs.
A team that's used to winning is replacing Football Friday Player of the Year finalist Josh Wilson with junior Deion Edwards. Edwards is strong but doesn't match the speed of Wilson.
Along with Wilson, the team lost a ton of starters. Only three or four guys are back on offense and defense. Smith said, "We lost a lot of good players." One player said the team will be "decent" but there are signs that the Raiders may exceed that expectation. The Raiders have a close-knit, family type of atmosphere and have more discipline and dedication as compared to previous years.
More players have put time in the weight room and the strength of the team will be the offensive line.
The Raiders open up the season at home against Buckingham.
