Martinsville, VA - MasterBrand Cabinets announced Friday it is closing its Martinsville location. This means all 335 of their employees will be without jobs.
The news came as a shock for Isiah Hairston. His friend called Friday morning, telling him that his job of two and a half years has come to an end...
"He said, 'Well they shut us down.' I was like, 'What do you mean they shut us down?' He was like 'MasterBrand is closed.' And I was like 'Ain't no way in the world MasterBrand is closed,'" said Isiah Hairston, an employee at MasterBrand Cabinets.
Hairston says he has bills to pay and people to take care of and now will have to find a new way to make ends meet.
"A lot of people was depending on that place," said Hairston.
"I feel bad for them, I wish there was something I could do for them," said John Beck, who delivers to MasterBrand Cabinets daily.
An Executive at MasterBrand, Robert Jacobs says they had no other option.
"For anybody in business, this is about the most difficult thing that we can do," he said.
Jacobs says this plant produces the same custom product as their other locations, and it has not been in high demand.
"This decision although difficult was fairly clear based upon where the customers are and where the other manufacturing facilities are," said Jacobs.
Still, this news comes as Martinsville remains highest for unemployment in Virginia.
"It's really tough, it's really tough. It's tough for our economy," said Richard Sarver, owner of Sarver Cleaning Service.
So Hairston spent the day researching a new career - something he didn't anticipate.
"The only way I would be looking is looking for something better. But as far as keeping a job, I figured I would have it for a while," he said.
Jacobs explains they will give them 60 days pay and benefits as well as help with a job search. The employees' last day will be August 10.
