Family & Friends Talk About 2-Year-Old Who Almost Drowned

Pittsylvania Co., VA -- A 2-year-old girl is in critical condition after nearly drowning at a Pittsylvania County home. EMS crews got to the 200 block of Marlin Road on Saturday night.

The family was at a friend's house for her birthday. They say the girl went outside, unnoticed, climbed up a ladder, and got into the pool. They know she loves to swim. But they never expected this to happen.

A celebration in the house turned into a nightmare by the pool. Hope Powell remembers her friend's 2-year-old, nicknamed 'Binky', wandered off for less than five minutes.

"When we come outside we couldn't find her," said Hope Powell, Binky's godmother.

"Me and my wife ran out this door and ran straight to this pool. And we found her floating on top of the water," said Donald Powell, a friend of the family.

They immediately pulled her out, performed CPR and called 911.

"I feel like I was going to have a heart attack. My heart was beating out of my chest and I was so scared," said Hope.

As rescue crews arrived, Binky was unresponsive. Crews flew her to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Now, friends and family wonder how this could have even happened.

"I guess when she went up that ladder she just thought about all the good times she had before and she was trying to have another good time," said Donald.

They say now she needs help more than ever.

"We are praying for the little girl to get a miracle, and I pray that everybody who sees this prays she gets a miracle. That's what she needs now," said Donald.

"Binky is a fighter. She is going to fight no matter what," said Hope.

Even though the pool has been up only a couple of months, the Powells have taken it down and they have a warning for other families.

"Whenever you have small children around a swimming pool, be sure that there is supervision. Be sure you don't take anything for granted," said Donald.

Holly says that Binky is now breathing on her own, her heart is beating but the MRI did not look good. They said her brain did not get enough oxygen. Still everyone is trying to stay positive.
