Hokies Kick Off Preseason Camp

Blacksburg - The sounds of fall football have returned. On the first day of practice the team looked sharp...but they also misfired a few times. The challenge for Coach Frank Beamer is to eliminate his team's mistakes and to find answers to his main questions.

Frank Beamer, 26TH-YEAR HOKIES HEAD COACH, said "Getting our punting game squared away is concern number one and then concern number two is, I think from what I saw today, I think we've got some really talented kids at tailback.  I think trying to figure out who we're going to work with because he just can't work with so many.  There's only so many reps here in preseason practice and then you look at wide receiver and there's a bunch of numbers there."

Another storyline is the offensive line.  Andrew Miller of Bassett is the only returning starter. Nick Becton, David Wang, Vinston Painter and Brent Benedict may not have experience but they're all upperclassmen. Logan Thomas has said he doesn't have any worries about the line but Tech fans will until they prove they can play.

James Gayle, VIRGINIA TECH JUNIOR DEF. END, said "I think they're coming along great.  It always takes offensive linemen a little while longer to get acclimated because they have to get to know each other better but I think they're going to be just fine."

Bruce Taylor, VIRGINIA TECH SENIOR LINEBACKER, said "I've gone against some pretty good offensive linemen and when I relate those guys to the guys that I've already played against, they're right there.  They're only going to get better especially when we put our pads on."

They'll do that this Saturday and then scrimmage on Sunday. That offense will be up against a defense that says it wants to be the number defense in the country.
