Lynchburg, VA - A female boxer who battled her way to Olympic gold Thursday has family in our area.
Keith Sanders is Claressa Shields' great, great uncle. He and his wife moved to Lynchburg from Flint, Michigan several years ago.
He never had any doubt his 17-year-old niece would make it big.
Thursday, Shields became the first female boxer from the U.S. to take home the gold medal. ABC 13's news director broke the news to her Lynchburg family.
"I just started screaming all in his ears on the phone. My heart started palpitating. The tears came in my eyes. I just couldn't control myself, I was just so emotional. It was a great thing," said Joanne Sanders .
Shields is expected to return to her home in Flint Michigan on Monday. That's when the Sanders plan on calling to congratulate her.
