Gretna Hawks - Football Friday Preview

Gretna, VA - In today's Football Friday Preview, we visit with the defending Division 2 state champion Gretna Hawks.

The Hawks won it all last year, capping a 13-2 season with the school's fifth state championship.  Gretna has played in six of the last nine state title games.

Kevin Saunders is back for his fourth season guiding the Hawks.  Gretna returns only two starters on defense, four on offense, but one of those is junior quarterback Dion Rosser. Saunders says he likes this team's speed and says the Hawks should be able to throw the ball quite a bit to some very good receivers.  Gretna opens the season at Essex August 24th.

"We're probably overall more athletic than we were last year and probably even overall, a lot faster than we were last year.  So hopefully, you know, we just keep getting better each week and we'll have a chance to do alright," said Saunders.

"We ain't that big but, you know, we've got heart and we play together and we just communicate with each other.  You know try to get each other better," said junior wide receiver/cornerback Virgil Glass.

"Yea we did lose a good senior class but, you know, we've got enough talent this year to do it again this year I believe," said senior wide receiver/linebacker Will Lilly.
