Denny McLain Visits Hillcats Game

Lynchburg - Two-time Cy Young winner and the last man to win 30 games in the majors, Denny McLain, paid a visit to Lynchburg City Stadium Sunday night.  The 31-game winner with the Tigers in 1968 was signing items for fans, including his latest book.  The Hillcats were going for a three-game sweep of the Carolina Mudcats.

Lynchburg starter Aaron Northcraft had a no-hitter going until two outs in the fourth when Giovanny Urshela unloads this one to left, goodbye no-hitter, 1-0 Carolina.
Northcraft, the league leader in strikeouts, pitched into the 8th and fanned seven in th4e game, allowing four runs.  The Hillcats, though, gave him NO runs and managed only five hits for the game.

Carolina wins 5-0, a pitching effort Denny McLain would have been proud of.  He told us with the way baseball is structured today, it's highly unlikely anybody will win 30 games again.

Denny McLain, 31-6, 1.96 ERA IN 1968, said "To win 15 is a monster effort.  To win 20 is a double monster effort and to win something above 20 is a gargantuan jump into outer space."
