Tour to Show off Farming Lifestyle in Bedford County

Posted:

Bedford Co.,VA - It takes a lot to get that glass of milk or piece of steak to your kitchen table. Farmers have sweated long and hard to bring those goods to you. The Extension Agency in Bedford County wants more people to understand this process, and appreciate it. That is why they are hosting a farm tour this weekend.

Attendants will see up close what it takes to be a farmer. And, extension agents say this tour will show the old and young alike that farming is a necessity, and even a little fun.

Farmer Ben Coleman wants to broaden the image of family life.

"I hope they get the impression that farming is not always dangerous, stinky, toxic, and not fun," said Ben Coleman, owner of Mountain Run Farm.

He and Extension Agent Scott Baker hope to do that by welcoming people to Coleman's 900 acre Mountain Run Farm. They also want to show young people they too can have a future in farming.

"If we can reach them, and let them know that agriculture is a good thing. We can also show them heck there might even be some jobs available for them when they grow up," said Scott Baker, Bedford County Extension Agent.

For the non-farming folks, Coleman plans to show them what drove him to this business.

"It's always an adventure so there's never an idea of what you are going to run into when you leave in the morning," said Coleman.

Whether it's the perky young pigs, he has 44 of them, or tracking down these rare Red Poll Cattle who often venture off... Coleman says he is rarely bored. He also will show attendants how he's steered from the traditional farming routine of cutting pastures to make more time for his family.

"Sitting on the tractor 10 hours a day would not have fit into my lifestyle. This has all been a push to get the tractors parked, and get the cattle doing the work," said Coleman.

The farm tour is this Saturday, August 18th from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. There will be agriculture exhibits, demonstrations of an antique cider press, and even a survival workshop.
