The next step is a championship for Rockbridge County. Each season Coach Jason White said they start with three goals – win district, win regionals, win state.
The Wildcats are looking to take the "Next Step" after finishing last year 9-3, beating Rustburg and then losing to eventual Division Three state champion Brookville in the second round of the playoffs.
Coach Jason White returns six starters on offense and seven on defense. Hunter Higgins and Curtis Fridley are the two returning offensive linemen. Fridley was an All-Region team member in 2011.
Senior quarterback Porter Abell has committed to Richmond as an athlete and he heads up on offense that has a strong offensive line and capable wide receivers. "I don't know that we'll throw more but we'll throw smarter," White said. He added that they plans to sell the run before the pass by using play action passing.
During the preseason the focus has been on getting in shape because the Wildcats have a number of players playing both offense and defense and depth is currently an issue especially on the offensive and defensive lines.
The coaching staff is also looking for consistency. In last week's scrimmages against Jefferson Forest and Harrisonburg the Wildcats "had some really good plays and some really bad plays," White said.
