Henry County Administrator Benny Summerlin Dies


Henry Co., VA - Henry County Administrator Benny Summerlin passed away Wednesday night at the age of 53.

Back in February, Summerlin announced he had been diagnosed with colon cancer.

Summerlin has been the county administrator and PSA general manager since 2002.

He served in several roles in Henry County, including as deputy sheriff, director of public safety and deputy county administrator.

Summerlin received a bachelor's degree in criminal justice from Old Dominion University in 1981 and got his master's degree in public administration from Virginia Tech in 2002.

There will be a visitation Friday night from 6-8 p.m. at Norris Funeral Home in Martinsville and a service Saturday at 2 p.m.in Bassett High School.

To help perpetuate Benny's legacy of community service, the family has establish the "Summerlin Scholarship Fund." The fund will award scholarships to local individuals who are seeking a college degree in a field of public service such as law enforcement, fire, emergency medical services, government, or non-profit management.
