Lynchburg,VA-It is back to the classroom Monday for a lot of kids in our area, and they aren't the only ones starting off the year with new stuff.
School buses in Lynchburg now have brand new cameras and GPS systems. City council used left over funds to help pay for the new technology. There are two cameras inside the bus and one outside of the bus. The exterior camera is right under the school bus stop sign and can catch drivers who do not stop when the sign is out.
"The bus drivers are very happy because it's been an issue they have brought to our attention a number of times. They want it taken care of, they want it addressed. They want to the students to be safe," said Jason Ferguson, director of transportation for Lynchburg City Schools.
The penalty for running a school bus stop is reckless driving and can carry a pretty hefty fine. That charge can also stay on your driving record for 11 years.
