Salem, VA – Crews have completed the blasting project on Interstate 81 in Montgomery County. The final blast was done August 16.
The blasting was for the truck climbing lane project on southbound I 81 between mile markers 120 and 125.
The $75.4 million project started in May 2011. Officials say they detonated 268 blasts in total, and moved 1 million cubic yards of material.
The project, set to be completed in November 2013, will add a 12-foot truck climbing lane to the interstate. It also includes the replacement of the southbound bridge on I-81 over Route 641 and the reconstruction of two bridges over I-81.
