Smith Mountain Lake, VA - Smith Mountain Lake could get more international tourists thanks to a new travel show. 'The Motorhead Traveler' visited the lake, and is planning to feature the area in two episodes.
The show is about motorsports activities and big tourist hot spots. Virginia's Tourism Department helped make this happen. The show is set to air in places like China, Russia, Italy, and here in the U.S.
The Smith Mountain Lake Regional Chamber spends hours looking for new ways to market the lake. Now, they are about to get some major spotlight for free.
"The impact for us and, as a region is about $51,000 of publicity that we had," said Vicki Gardner, executive director for the Smith Mountain Lake Regional Chamber of Commerce.
The Canadian show "The Motorhead Traveler" dropped in on Bridgewater Marina to take a look at the sights, sounds and flavor of the lake.
"We hopped into just an amazing boat that took us around the lake, the 500 miles of shoreline. We stopped at a private island where they actually put together other segments of the show," said Gardner.
The show will feature Smith Mountain Lake's adventures on the water -- like jet skiing boating, and fishing. Gardner says the show is available in 40 million households. Chamber members aren't the only ones smiling about this.
"Oh my gosh! I think it's fabulous. I mean it will be really good for business," said Carol Swain, owner of 'The Little Gallery.'
It's an opportunity for lake businesses to cash in on new tourists, and many say it's about time.
"Smith Mountain Lake was for many years called the 'best kept secret,' but I think the secret is out now. Now it's really going to be out," said Swain.
The show is scheduled to air in September. The show also made stops at the Virginia International Raceway, Martinsville, Henry County, and the Virginia Museum of Transportation in Roanoke.
