Civil War Re-enactor Spreads Passion for Spinning Wool

Appomattox, VA - A local Civil War re-enactor is taking her hobby to the next level. Dawn Doss is spreading her passion for spinning wool.

On Saturday, she stopped by the Museum of the Confederacy in Appomattox. She taught visitors how women would have spun wool back in the early 1800s.

Doss says her interest started to pick up several years ago after buying her own spinning wheel. Now, she's dedicated to teaching everything about the craft, from start to finish.

"The wool has been carded and now it's in roving form. The pulling part is called drafting, and it just gets it to stretch. It's a matter of practice to keep it from stretching too far and breaking," said Doss.

If you missed the spinning class, there's more historical events coming up. The Museum is hosting Civil War dance lessons on September 8th at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Dance lessons are included in the admissions price.
