Work on New Stretch of Greenway in Roanoke

Roanoke, VA - Crews are starting work on another link in the Roanoke Valley Greenway in Salem.

Monday, officials broke ground next to East Salem Elementary where they're building a one-mile section of the greenway. The new line will run behind GE and end at Salem Turnpike.

Officials hope then new section will eventually link up the Roanoke River Greenway with the Hanging Rock Battlefield Trail.

"These funds were secured several years ago under an earlier transportation bill. It's been a long time in the planning and figuring out exactly how this greenway was going to be built," said Rep. Bob Goodlatte, 6th District.

Overall, Goodlatte hopes the greenway system will eventually run from Bedford County to Montgomery County.

Once complete, the paved part of the trail system will be nearly 23 miles in length.
