Why We Celebrate Labor Day

Posted:

Lynchburg, VA - Having an extra day off for Labor day weekend sure is nice, but do you really know why we celebrate it? Contrary to popular belief, the holiday is not an excuse for a long weekend or the kickoff of football season.

According to the Lynchburg Museum, it became a federal holiday in 1894 to ease the strife of unregulated labor conditions. In the 19th century there were no labor regulations so children as young as five and everyone else would work 12 or 14 hour days, seven days a week.

"There was a large labor movement that started happening in that time. Workers wanted better working conditions in the late 1890s," Whitney Roberts, membership coordinator of the Lynchburg Museum said.

Congress passed the act after riots broke out in Chicago.
