Double Drowning at Smith Mountain Lake

Posted:

Bedford Co., VA- We have gotten word that two people drowned Saturday afternoon at Smith Mountain Lake.

Police got the call at 1:20 p.m. It happened near Anthony Home Rd in Huddleston, VA.

The Department of Game and Inland Fisheries is investigating the accident.  They say the men were in a boat just out from Beach Island.

Officials say 18-year-old Kelvin Staffon, who could not swim, jumped into the water thinking it was shallow. The water was about 15 feet deep and Staffon began to struggle. 47-year-old Daniel Leannais jumped in to help Staffon, but wasn't able to.

Officials say both Leannais and Staffon's bodies were recovered near the entrance to Craddock Creek.

Both men were from Williamsburg, VA. Neither was wearing a life jacket.
