Ringgold , VA - Like most, Dan River High School Principal Steve Mayhew will never forget where he was on the morning of September 11.
"I can remember exactly what I was doing that day. I was with the students. We were just beginning the day," said Mayhew.
He makes sure his students are reminded of those we lost and those who sacrificed on that day during the annual "At the Arch" ceremony.
"This is our 11th year under the leadership and direction of our JROTC staff. We involve our students and it gives them the opportunity to come together and we spend that time remembering those victims that were lost," said Mayhew.
The JROTC, led by senior instructor Ronnie Emerson, were joined by fellow students and community members.
Delegate Danny Marshall and Senator Bill Stanley were keynote speakers.
"I think its important to make sure that we teach the next generations how important that day was and how it impacted our lives, because its also teaching them not only about the tragedy of 9/11 but also about freedom, " said Stanley.
The JROTC ended with the presentation of the Freedom Flag as well as a new flag they plan to display.
"This is called the Flag of Honor and Flag of Heroes....each victim's name is etched on that flag," said Emerson.
The new flag will go on display in the school next to a piece of the Pentagon the students received at last year's ceremony.
