Family of Eight Displaced by Overnight Fire

Bedford Co., VA - An overnight fire in Bedford County has left eight people without a home, and investigators say it was all an accident.

It happened at 11 p.m. Tuesday on Sharp Turn Road in Stewartsville.

Investigators say improperly discarded smoking materials lead to the fire leaving four adults and four kids are homeless.

First responders showed up expecting to find people trapped but instead found the extended family huddling in the woods and led them to safety.

One firefighter says when he arrived, the trailer was engulfed in flames, as was everything within 30 yards of that trailer.

Neighbors and firefighters on the scene describe a huge wall of fire with intense heat that actually created several explosions.

"We heard popping and cracking. Big explosions going on. It would be down one minute then a big burst of flames coming up the next. It was crazy," said neighbor Tiffany Adams.

The family is staying in a Roanoke hotel right now for a few days thanks to the American Red Cross.

The family, which includes a newborn, a 3-year-old and a 6-year-old, says there has been an outpouring of support.

However they are hoping someone can help them find a new home, in the Stewartsville area, so their first grader can stay at Stewartsville Elementary.
