Jefferson Forest HS Teacher Wins 'Teacher of the Year'

Bedford Co., VA - A Bedford County teacher got quite a surprise when he went to class Thursday.

David Webb walked into to his band room to applause from students and school administrators.

The Jefferson Forest High School band teacher is one of eight finalists in the running for Virginia "Teacher of the Year."

Webb was named the Bedford County Public Schools teacher of the year earlier this year.

School administrators presented him with a letter from the governor and state superintendent.

Webb says he was blown away by the news today.

"I was shocked from the beginning when I was named 'Teacher of the Year' for Jefferson Forest. This is beyond my imagination," he said.

Roanoke special education teacher Tracey Nielsen is also in the running. Lynchburg teacher Meg Smith was last year's teacher of the year.

The Virginia Teacher of the Year will be named October 12.
