Lynchburg Hillcats Fans Pumped Over Championship Win

Lynchburg, VA- The Hillcats won the Carolina League Championship Wednesday night, and it set off a wild on-field celebration.

A baseball diamond might not seem like a prime spot for a ladies night. But whenever the Hillcats are playing you can bet on seeing Kimberly Combs and Shirley Luther. Their love for the Hillcats isn't confined to this field.

"If you've seen my vehicle, I have love cats on it, and Lynchburg Hillcats stickers all over it," said Kimberly Combs, president of the Hillcats Booster Club.

"When I listen to them on the radio you would think I'm at the stadium because I'm whooping and hollering. I also email and let the player know I'm with them all the way," said Shirley Luther, a die-hard Hillcats fan.

At the bottom of the 11th, bases are loaded, and a fly ball leads to the winning slide.

"Oh my gosh! We did it. Oh my gosh! I feel so proud of them, knowing that they work so hard, and just came through the whole thing," said Combs.

It was a huge win for the minor league team that hasn't won a Carolina League championship since 2009.

"As we were sizing the guys for rings, they were so excited. They were like, ‘When are we going to get the rings? When are we going to get the rings?'" said Ronnie Roberts, assistant general manager of the Lynchburg Hillcats.

Luther and Combs say the series was a bit of a rollercoaster for fans, but their journey to victory is even sweeter now.

"They played hard. They really did, and I'm so proud of them," said Luther.

The Hillcats Booster Club plan to make a banner honoring the champions, and march with it in Lynchburg Christmas Parade.
