Pittsylvania Co., VA - A homeowner's worst nightmare was the scene at Teresa Hedrick's home Thursday after an evening of cooking burgers on the grill.
"We was getting ready to eat and my husband walked back outside to put the top on the charcoal grill, and he came in and told me to get out, the house was on fire," said Hedrick.
Her home on April Lane was engulfed in flames.
Mt. Hermon Fire and Rescue responded in less than four minutes.
"We responded along with Mt. Cross Fire and Rescue to the scene. Had heavy smoke and fire showing, venting from the roof," said Chief Ernest Terry.
Hedrick and her husband were the only people at the home.
They and their three pets made it out okay.
"We have a bird, a cat and a dog. They got out alright," said Hedrick.
Now as the family tries to pick up the pieces, they remain grateful for the life they have as they let go of the things they've lost.
"I lived here for 19 years, and I'm glad that my parents got out because I can't replace my parents. They can build a new house, they can get new things, but I couldn't get my parents back," said Hedrick's daughter Melissa Hedrick.
"I think that's what keeps you going is you know that nobody's hurt and like I said, a house can be replaced. I hate it but it can be taken care of," said Hedrick.
The Red Cross has stepped in to help the family with hotel costs and other expenses.
