High School Opens its Doors for Reunion After 59 Years

Posted:

South Boston, VA - High school sweethearts Jack and Bertha Jane Dunavant were part of the last graduating class of C.H. Friend High School. Now they're organizing a reunion.

The school most recently operated as an elementary, but when the school closed again, Jack Dunavant bought it at an auction.

At the reunion in October, former students will find their old school just like they left it.

Jack and Bertha Jane Dunavant first fell in love at C.H. Friend High School as students in the class of 1953.

"It was just a glorious time. We had a ball...started off in C.H. Friend here and have been together ever since," said Bertha Jane Dunavant.

They never would have guessed that one day they would own the school.

"I just saw it as an opportunity to preserve the school which is probably the most beautiful building in the business area of South Boston, " said Jack Dunavant.

Now after a lot of interest from former classmates, the Dunavants are organizing a reunion for anyone who attended C.H. Friend between the years of 1938 and 1953.

"We've just gotten together and we've tried to get the word out. We have no idea whether we'll end up with 50 or 500, but we are just so looking forward to everybody, " Bertha Jane Dunavant.

The couple wants to renovate the old school and find a new purpose for it that will benefit South Boston.

Jack Dunavant said he wants to make something useful out of it for the community.

In the meantime, they hope that the reunion on October 13 will give former classmates a chance to dance, dine and make new memories with old friends.

"The main thing we want to do is get the people together and just talk about the good old days, " said Bertha Jane Dunavant.

Any former students interested in attending must register by October 1. To register, send your name, class year and a check for $35 to LLoyd Dixon at 7083 Bill Tuck Highway, Virgilina, VA 24598.

The reunion will be held at C.H. Friend, 600 Marshall Avenue in South Boston at 6 p.m.
