New Medical Center Coming to Gretna

Posted:

Pittsylvania Co., VA - Monday night, the Centra Board of Directors moved forward with the plan to build a new 50,000 square foot medical center in Gretna.

The new center would replace the current Gretna Medical Center and will provide the people of Gretna with a wide range of health services without having to travel into neighboring communities. It would also create 60 new jobs.

Pittsylvania County Supervisor Jerry Hagerman has been waiting for this day for a long time.

"We had really needed it in this area so I'm just proud for the citizens and what they can expect from this facility," he said.

The current Centra Health Center in Gretna serves just a small percentage of what the new center will be able to accommodate.

"They're going to have all of the facilities they need to handle almost any kind of situation," said Hagerman.

The new center will sit on 12 acres of land and will be operate 24 hours a day. This is great news for folks in Gretna that often find themselves driving long distances for care.

"They're having to travel now 45 minutes either south or north and probably for many who are in this district, they can be at this medical center in 15 minutes," said Hagerman.

This is also good news for folks dealing with unemployment.

"There are almost 20 employees now at the other center so they're going to hire 60 more. They've estimated that the salaries are going to be somewhere around $50,000 per person. The economy here in town is certainly going to pick up a great deal," said Hagerman.

Now Hagerman hopes that this will be the first step in the people of Gretna getting the efficient care they deserve.

"The citizens, the people who elected me...they expect it and I'm glad to see they're getting it," he said.

Centra leaders have applied for a Certificate of Public Need in order to get an advanced CT scanner for the facility.

They say they need community support to get that certificate. An open information meeting about the project will be held on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at Gretna High School.
