Group Issues List of More Possible Uranium Sites

Posted:

Roanoke, VA - The Roanoke River Basin Association released a report that shows there are far more places in Pittsylvania County where uranium could be mined if the ban is lifted.

A list of at least 70 additional sites in the area was released Wednesday.

Back in the 80s, a company called Marline Corporation secured mineral rights in more than 40,000 acres of land for uranium exploration.

Volunteers with the RRBA catalogued all the leases and identified roads where it could possibly take place if the ban is ever lifted.

Spokesperson Andrew Lester says they felt it was important for people living in this area to be aware in case the ban is lifted.

"We didn't want Richmond making the decision for us. We want the people here to be making their own decision, and the only way to make a good decision is to have as much information as you can," he said.

These sites are considerably smaller in comparison to Coles Hill and a spokesperson with Virginia Uranium says they would not be economically viable.

Volunteers with RRBA have catalogued all the leases and identified the roads where exploration and mining could possibly take place if the ban is lifted.
