Police Searching for Man Who Robbed Woman at ATM

Danville, VA --  Danville Police are on the lookout for the person who robbed a woman outside a bank Wednesday night.

The woman did not want to go on camera. Police say the man stole an undisclosed amount of money and left on foot. They say this is not a frequent crime, but everyone should know what to do if this happens to them.

A normal night turned terrifying when a McDonald's worker from the Ballou Park shopping center left to submit a money drop. She stood in the West Main American National Bank parking lot just before 9 p.m. when she realized she wasn't alone.

"It's very scary for anybody," said Lt. Scott Eanes with the Danville Police Department.

Police say the man pointed a gun at her, demanding money. She already deposited the cash so the man took her wallet.

"The male then took off running and jumped a fence and ran down West Main Street," said Eanes.

The suspect has been described as a dark skinned black male with a thin build, and wearing a dark colored hoodie, gloves and blue jeans.

Police say handing over her wallet was the right thing to do.

"If they produce any type of weapon or if you are scared of them, give it to them. It is not worth your life," said Eanes.

Before you ever get in this situation, police suggest checking the parking lot go behind the building and make sure no one is there. But if this does happen.

"Just give them the money and try to get a best description of that particular person as you can," said Eanes.

The investigation is still ongoing, but if you have any information about this case, call Crime Stoppers at (434) 793-0000.
