Clifford - Region 3 Golf Tournament action Monday afternoon at Winton Country Club.
JF's Matthew Stanley had a strong day, he birdied 18 to shoot 3-over 74 to earn one of the individual spots for the state tournament. JF finished fourth in team play, Rustburg earned third, Blake Wisecarver with the great chip at 18 to within a couple of feet of the hole. The Red Devils missed a state berth as a team by just three shots. Wilson Simmons of E.C. Glass hit a nice shot into the final hole within a few feet of the cup, Glass though finished eighth out of nine teams.
Robbie Failes of Spotswood shot the day's best score of 3-under 68 as the Trailblazers shot a 306 to beat Lord Botetourt by three shots. Justin Nichols led Botetourt with a 72.
Spotswood and Lord Botetourt are the two TEAMS advancing to the state tournament in Harrisonburg.
Justin Nichols, who led Lord Botetourt with a 72, said "Today was definitely the short game, chipping and putting. I made I don't know how many five, six, seven-footers for pars. That really kept the day going and didn't allow it to go downhill too quickly."
Seminole District Player of the Year Clayton Forren of Rustburg shot 76 and just missed earning an individual state berth, losing out in a playoff for the final individual spot. Spotswood, won the title with a four-player 306 total, three ahead of Lord Botetourt at 309. Rustburg was third at 312, then JF at 316, Fort Defiance 319, Waynesboro and William Byrd at 322, E.C. Glass at 328 and Staunton River at 334.
