Campbell County Fishing Supply Store Burglarized

Posted:

Campbell Co., VA - Campbell County investigators are looking into something a bit fishy. They say someone broke into the Tackle Shop on Timberlake Road and stole a bunch of merchandise Friday night or early Saturday. The owner of the store says the thief or thieves made off with thousands of dollars worth of fishing supplies. And this comes at a very bad time for fishing fanatics.

"It took a real jerk to do it," Marvin Ponton, Owner of The Tackle Box said.

The news could not have come at a worse time for owner Marvin Ponton.

"We're getting ready to close down anyway. If they had waited a month, it wouldn't have happened," Ponton said. "If I could have got him in person, I probably would have shot him, but I guess that's not a good thing to do. It's not the kind of person I am, but I'm very upset with them and I feel like I've really been violated."

Ponton did not get off the hook so easy.

"I worked hard to get all that, somebody in just a matter of minutes took it all," Ponton said. "They took $10,000 worth."

"It was a real shock to find out something happened down here because this is a local hangout for most of the fishermen and a lot of people on the street eat here everyday," Customer Ed Smith said.

In Ponton's case, the early bird really did get the worm. He says the thief or thieves made off with about 100 rods and reels.

"I would probably tell them, enjoy their life and maybe one day when they meet their eternal resting place and have to meet their God at the gate that they'll have to atone for what they did,"  Ponton said.

Again, we want to stress Ponton planned to close his shop at the end of the month and this break-in did not persuade him to do it. Fishermen say this comes at a very bad time since fishing season is in full swing and now the Tackle Shop is low on merchandise. If you have any information, call the Campbell County Sheriff's Office.
