People Travel Far to See Fall Foliage

Posted:

Blue Ridge Parkway, VA - It is something Virginia is known for; the landscapes of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Now the area is drawing a lot of people near and far to enjoy the bright, bold, fall foliage. The leaves are only starting to turn but they really attract business and tourism to the area. The breathtaking views are worth the drive. For one couple, it was worth a 2,000 mile trip to see them.

All is quiet, all is still on the Blue Ridge Parkway. All that can be heard, is the wind's whisper. A breathtaking sight that drew Don and Carol Geels all the way from Nevada.

"It's been everything we hoped and dreamed it would be," Don Gills said. "Reds, yellows, oranges, greens. The colors were fabulous everywhere."

71-year-old Geels says it was worth the drive and far exceeded his expectations. But, park rangers say the best is yet to come!

"It's especially beautiful in the fall," Lead Interpretive Ranger, Paulette Mullinax said.

She says the crowds have already starting coming.

"We usually get, especially on weekends a whole bunch of people," Mullinax said.

Something she says is great for local businesses in the area.

"I think they're all real happy to see all of visitors come in," Mullinax said.

But the big question on many people's minds is when will the leaves peak? To that question, Mullinax says it depends on a lot of factors.

"How cool it is at night, how much rain we get," Mullinax said.

Park Rangers say fall foliage generally peaks around mid-October. But in some years, it peaks in the beginning of November. The best bet is the check the foliage weekly report on the Blue Ridge Parkway's website.
