Lynchburg, VA -  The Virginia Department of Health has three new cases of fungal meningitis as of Wednesday. The new total is as follows: 27 confirmed cases of fungal meningitis, including one death. Officials say 24 are residents of Virginia and 3 are residents of West Virginia.

There are other cases under investigation right now, and the department of health expects the number of people stricken to climb over the next several days.

The biggest concern is over patients who had an epidural injection on or after August 8.

The goal in the coming week is to reach out to affected patients once again -there are 689 of them according to the Virginia Department of Health.

They have already been contacted by the facility where they have the procedure -- but the health department is going to follow up by phone and in person monitor their status and answer questions.

Patients have had symptoms generally starting from 1 to 4 weeks after their injection -- but not all of them will get sick.  Symptoms that should prompt patients to seek medical care include: fever, new or worsening headache, neck stiffness, sensitivity to light, new weakness or numbness, increasing pain, redness or swelling of the injection site.
