Troops Pay Respects to Virginia State Trooper Killed

Pulaski, VA – It was a somber day in Pulaski as hundreds of first responders from all over the country paid their last respects to State Trooper Andrew Fox.

Fox, who was 27 years old, was killed in the line of duty this past weekend. The Tazewell County native was hit while directing traffic at the Virginia State Fair.

Hundreds came out to The Refreshing Place, which is part of the Church of God, to say goodbye to the veteran of the state police.

Those who knew Trooper Andrew Fox say there is no doubt he will be missed. For those who didn't know him, no distance is too far to say goodbye.

"It lets them know that people across the country support the need for grieving, and we're here if they need anything from us," said Sgt. Wyndell Hurt from the New York State Police.

Before being assigned to the state police post in Dublin, Fox served in Fairfax where his commander remembers the young trooper as one of the best up and coming troopers on the force.

"We've lost one of the finest troopers that I have seen in my career…a very extraordinary young man that we have lost," said Sgt Jeremy Kaplan with the Virginia State Police.

Fox was killed Friday night as he was directing traffic in Hanover County for the State Fair of Virginia.

Fox was a Virginia Tech graduate who started his career with the Tazewell Police Department before joining the Virginia State Police.

His death, difficult to reconcile, can only reinforce a law that was passed to help prevent deaths just like Fox's.

"State law says that motorists are required to slow down and move over for stopped emergency vehicles. If there's no opportunity to move to an adjacent lane, then we ask motorists to slow down and pay attention to their surroundings," said Kaplan.

Fox is the 58th state trooper to be killed in the line of duty since the department was formed 80 years ago.
