Sweet Briar College Hosts Bipartisan Debate Party

Sweet Briar, VA - Forty women at Sweet Briar College, divided in their political philosophies, came together Thursday night. While they may not agree on who should win this election, they do agree that there's great value in watching and learning.

"I am a Democrat, through and through, and yes, other people here, they're Republicans," said Simone Faas, president of the Sweet Briar College Democrats.

"It's pretty mixed. Looking around, it looks really mixed, so that's great," said Hailey Floyd, president of the Sweet Briar College Republicans.

Both Democrats and Republicans came together Thursday.

"I didn't even offer free credit, they're here on their own free will," said Sweet Briar Government Professor, Steve Bragaw.

Bragaw took teaching out of the classroom, explaining these ladies have a lot to learn from one another.

"Democracy is not a spectator sport. And you can learn a lot about debating the issues, talking about the issues with other people. Not treating politics as something you can't talk about in public," he said.

"I can't vote yet. I'm in the process of filling out my citizenship form. I'm from Iraq," said student Tara Abdulkareem.

Abdulkareem can't even vote, but knew Thursday night was incredibly important.

"Foreign policy, I think is very important, because the United States is viewed by everyone. And they are viewed differently by other countries," she said.

"I think there are a lot of issues that are important to women in this election," said Floyd.

So as women, they came together to watch and listen to two men battle it out for their votes.

"I think it's extremely important that students, at a college, especially young women, are involved in the election," said Faas.

The women are hoping to have another watch party, when the Presidential candidates take the stage again on Tuesday, October 16th.
