Mediator Named to Help Safe Boones Mill Depot

Posted:

Boones Mill, VA – Monday was the deadline for preservationists hoping to save the historic train depot in Boones Mill.

They needed to show Norfolk Southern that they have money and space to renovate that building.

Preservationists say unfortunately, they have no place to put the building at the moment, but they are happy to report they have more than $20,000 in donations.

It's unclear whether that will be enough to convince Norfolk Southern to give preservationists more time to continue their fundraising efforts.

In the meantime, the president of the citizen group working to preserve the century old building says Norfolk Southern has tapped Virginia Transportation Museum Director Bev Fitzpatrick as a mediator between the railroad, preservationists and the town as the project moves forward.

"We've agreed to that, and we look forward to making peace and moving forward together. All of us want to see the depot to be saved," said Lois Slotnick, who is leading the citizen preservation effort.

The effort to save the depot has led to a rift between several of the citizens working on the project and town management.

That's caused communication problems with the railroad, which is why a mediator is needed.
