Lynchburg, VA- Saturday at Lynchburg City Stadium the Central Virginia Health District and the Lynchburg Fire Department partnered to give out 400 free flu shots.
The shots were given on a first-come, first-serve basis to people in Lynchburg and surrounding counties.
The event also gave the fire department a chance to practice its mass vaccination plan. Organizers of the event say vaccinating 400 people will have an effect on the entire community's health.
"I think it's wonderful for those of us that don't have resources to pay for it and don't want to be sick, and can't afford to be sick. And we don't want a mass illness breaking out in the community," said Joyce Wheeler, who received the flu shot.
According to the Health Department, each year in the United States, about 200,000 people are hospitalized due to flu illness.
