Danville, VA - George Washington High School in Danville is a step closer to getting new sports facilities.
A local Danville businessman donated $100,000 toward the building of the multi-purpose complex. That's just a fraction of the more than $2 million they need, but the committee's chairman says they are still excited.
"In the City of Danville, we have not had a state competition since 1996 and the reason is because of the facility that we have," said Dr. Phillip Campbell, Chairman of the Steering Committee.
Students at George Washington High School have been dealing with a sub-par recreational area for quite some time. Now, Campbell hopes the community will step up and help get the students the kind of facilities they deserve.
"By going through grants and persons in the community, alumni club, booster club and all the other pieces that can help us to make sure that this can happen for our kids," said Campbell.
Campbell , who also sits on the school board, says the committee first approached City Council for funds because the school board can't finance the project. Neither can the city, at least right now.
"Ultimately, we may decide to allocate some funds to help that project get across the finish line but I don't think we're at that stage yet," said Lee Vogler from Danville City Council.
Vogler and others hope the committee will be successful in their efforts.
"I want to see them continue to pull their weight. I'd love to see it more than anybody and I wish them the best of luck," said Vogler.
Campbell hopes to see the Multi-Purpose Complex become a reality in 2013. The plan is to accommodate a wide-array of sports in the complex, and he believes it could be a boost to the economy in the area.
