Roanoke's Police Chief Honored

Posted:

Roanoke, VA - Roanoke's Police Chief spent some time in the spotlight Wednesday morning.

Chief Chris Perkins was honored as police officer of the year by the Virginia American Legion. He has won a similar award from the Virginia Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Perkins leads a department that has seen seven straight years of decline in violent crimes as well as 16 consecutive years with national accreditation.

"I'm merely the person that's been named chief. I'm doing as much as I can but it's everyday work of the men and women that are out there, in our community, building those bonds that truly make this a safer community," said Perkins.

Other than crediting his department, Perkins believes his community approach to policing is making the difference.

Perkins has been chief for two years and served as assistant chief before that.
