Voting History Mailed to Lynchburg Area Residents

Posted:

Lynchburg, VA – Voters throughout the area are receiving lists informing them whether their neighbors voted in previous elections.

More than 2 million vote history audits were sent nationwide by Americans for Limited Government, a Northern Virginia based nonprofit. The audits list the names and addresses of people living near the recipient and whether those neighbors voted in the 2004 and 2008 elections.

"I think it's really none of my business how they voted", said Jill Butler, who received one of the mailers in Forest.

Tammy Brown received one in Appomattox. She believes the mailers are meant to embarrass people for not voting.

"There are some people out there who may take it too far, you know and really lash out to their neighbors if they see that they haven't voted", said Brown. "Hopefully it won't come to that."

Americans for Limited Government declined our request for a phone interview. Richard Manning, a group spokesman emailed this statement:

"Using publicly available information, we have been able to identify voters who have a tendency to vote but for whatever reason have failed to do so at the most critical moments. We unapologetically urge these voters to exercise their right to vote, a goal which we are confident everyone applauds."

Virginia law allows nonprofits to buy voter lists, to send mailers to encourage voter participation, as long as there is no intimidation. The Virginia State Board of Elections says it did not sell a list to Americans for Limited Government. The board suspects someone else who bought the list gave it to this group.
