Rash of Vandalism Upsets Amherst Co. Neighborhood

Posted:

Amherst Co., VA - For three months, vandals have destroyed or damaged dozens of pieces of property in the Monroe and Madison Heights areas of Amherst County.

In August, there was an opossum beaten to death with a brick.

The sheriff's office says Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning, it appears the same vandals struck again.

Mailboxes, street signs and even political signs were either taken or damaged. And neighbors are worried about what will happen next.

Take a drive down Cedar Gate Road and it's clear: Vandals have left their mark.

"When I opened my mailbox, I said 'Oh my goodness,'" said Bertie Branham.

Josephine Kelly has lived on the same street for more than half a century, but this was the first .

"My neighbor, who lives back behind me, came by and said 'What happened to your mailbox?'" said Kelly.

There were others, smashed in, torn up and in pieces.

"They were all smashed in and my Aunt Teresa, her door was taken off of it," said Tiana Thomas.

So far, the sheriff's office is investigating ten reports of damaged mailboxes, but there are probably many more, like Branham's that have not been reported.

Campaign signs are missing too, but at least it was distributed evenly between both Obama and Romney.

"All the signs through here and down the road a little ways were taken," said Thomas pointing to where the signs used to be.

As if that wasn't enough, a literal "F U" is spray painted at the intersection of High Peak and Laurel Cliff Roads. But on Cedar Gate Road, residents have their own message for whoever's responsible."

"I hope they get caught, I really do," said Branham.

"You never know what else they're willing to do," said Thomas.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-888-798-5900. It's confidential and you could get up to a $1,000 in reward money.
