Nathan's Christmas Cheer Spreads to Bedford

Posted:

Bedford, VA - Christmas came early to Bedford. Friday night, people took to the streets and began caroling. It's another way Rustburg's Nathan Norman has brought joy to others' lives.

Nathan is suffering from a rare form of cancer. His story has had a huge impact on our area.

The latest, a church in Bedford, shared Nathan's wish, to celebrate Christmas every day, while raising awareness for an always important cause.

In the cold windy darkness of night, candles lit the way, as a small but strong group walked a mile, from the Bedford County Courthouse to their church.

All the while, singing.

"We just wanted to raise awareness of childhood cancer, and do this tonight in honor of him," said the event organizer, Lisa Dodson.

She heard of Nathan's story, and wanted to spread Christmas cheer for all in Bedford to hear.

"We decided as a church to try to get the Bedford community involved, because there wasn't a lot going on in the Bedford community. Most of it's been more Rustburg and Lynchburg geared," she said.

But it didn't stop with singing, "Pens, pencils, crayons, markers, coloring books, crossword books," listed Lisa.

All of that, to go in Christmas bags; this, for Nathan's other wish, to share his Christmas gifts with the children he receives treatment with, at Duke Medical Center.

"I believe that his smile is what his faith is. And I believe that he is believing that there is something bigger, than just a word named cancer," said Lisa's husband and Church pastor, Mike Dodson.

Dodson says though only five years old, and barely four feet tall, Nathan has a whole lot to teach the world.

"Whether you have every day as Christmas, we should live every day to the fullest, and I believe that he's taught a lot of people that," he said.

If you know a family whose child is fighting cancer, here are some ideas on how to help them out without spending a dime.

•Mow the lawn/help with yard work

•Babysit the children so Mom & Dad can have a "date"

•Help clean the house

•Pick up and wash laundry

•Cooking a meal for the family (this is so much nicer than just a gift card to a restaurant/most families have to eat out so much anyway and having a home cooked meal can be a blessing.)

•Pick up children from school

•Host a sleepover for any siblings

•Help coordinate local fundraising
