309 Winery to Close in Bedford

Posted:

Bedford, VA – The owners of Bedford's 309 Winery announce the restaurant and wine shop will close November 24.

309 Winery operates inside the historic John Wharton Cottage. Co-owner Peggy Overstreet says the restaurant's landlord, the Wharton Memorial Foundation, is not renewing the restaurant's lease.

"We chose Bedford and we chose this location because we just loved it," said Overstreet. "It gave the ambiance that we wanted. We looked at being here long term."

Overstreet says she and her business partner are looking for a new location and possibly a new name, since 309 N Bridge Street will no longer be home.

"We've been looking at a lot of different options, but there just doesn't seem to be anything like this in Bedford," said Overstreet. "We really wanted to stay in the Bedford community."

A Wharton Foundation board member confirms the lease with the owners of 309 Winery expires November 30. The board president told us it's a private matter and the board has no comment.

The restaurant has live music until 10 p.m. most nights.  There have been two noise complaints to police since 309 Winery opened in April 2011, one made by another tenant in the same building and the other made by a neighbor. Overstreet believes the foundation wants a business that closes at 5 p.m. in the space.

Bedford Tourism Director Sergei Troubetzkoy lives in the same building where the restaurant is located. He's also a Wharton Foundation board member. Troubetzkoy tells us he was not present at the two meetings where the 309 Winery lease was discussed, and if he had been at those meetings, he would not have voted.
