Lynchburg, VA - A Lynchburg nonprofit that serves those with developmental disabilities celebrated its 50th anniversary Tuesday.
The Arc of Central Virginia serves 73 clients Monday through Friday, with social and recreational activities.
A group of parents started the center to give the developmentally disabled opportunities to learn and grow.
Mayor Mike Gillette presented board members with a proclamation, congratulating them on the milestone.
For the president of the board of directors, the anniversary falls on another special day.
"This has been a program near and dear to my heart and my family's heart because my brother has been a client here for over 25 years," Allen Layne said, adding it's also his brother's 50th birthday.
The executive director expects to see a growing need for their services as state training centers begin to close.
Along with their day program there's a small residential facility as well.
