Man Convicted of Manslaughter for Deadly Shooting in Wylliesburg

Charlotte Court House, VA - A jury recommended Akim Simmons serve nine years for shooting and killing Alphonso Watson last November.

The Charlotte County Commonwealth's attorney was trying him for first-degree murder, while defense attorneys tried to argue the shooting was in self defense.

Charlotte County investigators say on November 30, 2011, Alphonso Watson showed up to his ex-girlfriend's home in Wylliesburg, got into a fight with her new boyfriend and was shot in the back of the neck.

Simmons' first trial ended in a hung jury.

The second jury deliberated for several hours Wednesday evening, but eventually knocked down the first-degree murder charge to voluntary manslaughter.

They recommended Simmons spend nine out of a maximum of ten years in prison.

A judge will decide whether to accept or reduce that sentence in January.
