Roanoke's New Reality Stars: 'Salvage Dawgs'

Posted:

Roanoke, VA - For the past eight months, a well known Roanoke business has been moonlighting in the world of reality TV and Thursday night's premiere of "Salvage Dawgs" could make Black Dog Salvage a household name across the nation.

If everything goes well with this first installment of "Salvage Dawgs," the crew down at Black Dog Salvage will have a lot to howl about as an eight part follow up is potentially on the horizon.

It hasn't been easy.

"It's a lot. It's certainly nothing I ever bargained for... or was looking for but shameless self promotion... you figure it out after awhile and this is a perfect avenue to sell our business," said Robert Culp, who co-owns Black Dog Salvage.

"If you like "Pickers" and "Pawn Stars" and everything but... what's that one thing? Boo Boo? What's her name? Honey Boo Boo. If you like Honey Boo Boo you won't like us," said Black Dog Salvage co-owner Mike Whiteside.

The show, which is part of a new surge in programming on the DIY channel, will take viewers into the world of historic salvage, much of which happens within the Roanoke-area.

"Well balanced as far as keeping the suspense going. You gotta leave a cliff hanger... so we've got a few of those. There's always some drama and danger with what we do, and that just comes naturally when I'm around," said Whiteside.

And while the big Hollywood paychecks aren't rolling in yet, the fun, experience and exposure have made it all worth it, whether there's a second season or not.

"If it stops at five episodes and they play that for a year... over and over and over again. I can take a calculator to it and I can tell you that we would never in a million, million years be able to afford that type of advertising," said Culp.

You can catch Salvage Dawgs Thursday on the DIY channel at 11 p.m. Friday at 9 p.m. and, if you're an early riser, Saturday morning at 8.
