Danville, VA-- Hundreds from the community came together to honor and celebrate Danville Mayor Sherman Saunders on Saturday night.
The Pittsylvania County Community Action held a dinner for him at the Institute of Advanced Learning.
After 42 years with the group, he retired last week. His long-time friends traveled down memory lane on Saturday night. They told some funny stories and shared some old pictures.
"I'm feeling a lot of love, and I don't like to say it but I'm feeling appreciated," Saunders said. "I mean for 42 years I did a job that I love to do, and I think that people did more for me than I did for the community."
Pittsylvania County Community Action is an agency that works to raise awareness and help eliminate poverty in the area.
