Lynchburg Superintendent Proposes Changes to School Calendar

Posted:

Lynchburg, BA - Lynchburg's school board will take a look at proposed school calendar changes the superintendent believes could help students who are falling behind.

The proposed calendar is similar to the one currently used at W.M. Bass Elementary School. It includes three separate weeks in October, February, and March.

Only students who need extra help will go to school those weeks.

"How many kids really in their heart of hearts are excited about going to summer school every year? This gives a chance for kids to catch up quarter by quarter, instead of year by year," said Superintendent Dr. Scott Brabrand.

The school year would also begin a week earlier and end a week later.

Brabrand says the proposed calendar will only work if the school system continues to receive a waiver from the state, allowing schools to open before Labor Day.
