Developers Plan New Life for Old South Boston Warehouse

South Boston, VA - Developers are taking a step back in time to give South Boston's last standing tobacco warehouse a new purpose.

Winston-Salem based company Rehab Development will be turning the New Brick Warehouse into 22 market rate apartments right in the heart of downtown.

The owner of the warehouse donated the building to nonprofit organization Destination Downtown South Boston under one condition: They had to preserve it and keep it from being torn down.

Now, after getting town council on board, they are doing just that.

Destination Downtown President Wayne Fuller hopes the old building will fill a new need for residential spaces in the downtown area.

"What I read about today's young society, they like to live near things where they can walk....with bicycles and baby carriages, and we have numerous things that they can go to," said Fuller.

The warehouse is located on Jefferson Avenue just steps away from the Prizery and Main Street shops and restaurants.

Rehab Development, which was responsible for developing the Taylor Lofts just a few blocks away, will be completing the $2.6 million project by December of next year.

Town Council Member Coleman Speece made the motion to approve the new development and he credits the Destination Downtown Group with pushing the project forward.

"They have been working very hard toward the revitalization of our South Boston downtown area, and this project will have a real impact on those efforts," said Speece.

Now, all involved hope this will be a step in the right direction toward economic growth.

"We're looking forward to using this as a catalyst for some of the land around here, so the more people you have, the more business you'll have and the more business retailers will do," said Fuller.

The apartments will be one and two-bedroom units, ranging from $700 to $1,000 a month rent.

Rehab Development is also in the process of developing an apartment building on Bridge Street in Danville set to be completed next year.
