Lynchburg College Helping Vets Get an Education

Lynchburg, VA - Lynchburg College has a pretty big reason to celebrate this Veterans Day. The school received a $250,000 check for the Dr. John D. Bower Veterans Scholarship Fund, and the donor is an LC alumnus.

Dr. John D. Bower graduated from Lynchburg College in 1957. Before that, he served in the United States Navy. He says he knows the importance of giving a vet the opportunity for education.

Private First Class Tyler Faulkner joined the Army National Guard in 2009. For three years in between deployments he went to Lynchburg College.

"You get thrown back into the world and it's not the easiest transition to make, from a combat scenario to work or home or even school," said Faulkner.

Paying for an education wasn't easy either, especially when you don't have a steady job here at home.

"Even if I saved up every single penny, I wouldn't be able to come back," said Faulkner.

That is until he looked into the federal benefits and scholarships for veterans at Lynchburg College.

"I have several veterans in my classes that none of us would be here if it weren't for benefits from the federal government and the school," said Faulkner.

The check is going to help veterans like Tyler and his friends have a brighter future. Bower started the fund. The name of the game: if the Flag Bearer Volunteers could raise $250,000, Bower would match it. They did and Bower kept his word.

"These are good kids who have done their duty who have committed themselves to a cause but, ladies and gentleman, we are going to need to support these people," said Bower.

Bower started the fund because he knows the troubles vets face when coming back to America. At one time, LC helped him. Now, he's helping the younger veterans.

"I would just say thank you," said Faulkner.

With this check the Veterans Scholarship fund reached $1.25 million. LC estimates that 8 to 10 veterans could get aid from Bower's Scholarship fund.
