Police Identify Staunton River HS Teen Killed in Bedford Co. Crash

Update 11:50 a.m.:

Bedford Co., VA – There is more tragedy for the already grieving Staunton River High School in Bedford County.

State police say another student has died after her car ran off the road around 9:15 p.m. Sunday on Route 24 near Meadors Spur Road.

Troopers say Ashley Brooke Barton, 17, overcorrected when she swerved to avoid hitting a deer.

It happened only about five miles down Route 24 from the other crash site.

A friend of Barton says Ashley was only about 5 minutes away from home when this happened.

Friends have already placed flowers on the tree at the site.

Camy Mullins, a friend who cheered with Ashley at Staunton River, says she came out here to see it because it didn't feel real. She says it's just too much all at once.

"I think we're going to start the healing process all over again after what happened Wednesday. We've lost three people on campus, and it's a tragedy. Staunton River hasn't had this in years. It's so unfortunate that it has to happen in someone's senior year and people that are getting ready to graduate and start to live their lives when they haven't even started," she said.

Mullins will be attending the funeral of Jacob Baird Monday afternoon. He was the driver in the accident last week.

Mullins says three funerals in a row are almost too much to take.

Staunton River students are out of school this week for the holiday, but she says many are getting together outside of school to grieve.
