Thieves Run Into SoBo Convenience Store With a Truck, Steal ATM

South Boston, VA -  Gene's Orange Market on Route 58 was burglarized at 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, and the thieves got away with a whole ATM.

It follows a similar crime at the Jiffy Convenience Store just 4 miles away, where thieves broke in and stole money from an ATM.

Police have not said whether there is a connection between the crimes, but there are similarities.

They just hope they get to the bottom of this recent string of crimes soon.

Halifax County Law Enforcement have had their hands full in the last couple of weeks.

South Boston Police and the Halifax County Sheriff's Office responded to the early morning break-in at Gene's Orange Market and could not believe what they saw.

"It's pretty unusual. I haven't seen anything like this or heard anything like this in quite some time, " said Halifax County Sheriff Fred Clark.

Clark says a white pick-up truck backed right into the front of the store. Two individuals then got out and removed the ATM.

"It's hard to believe that somebody would go through such trouble to gain entrance as they did here, " Clark said.

The Orange Market sits not far from the Jiffy Convenience Store that has been robbed twice in less than a week.

Police are still investigating a string of burglaries on South Main Street in Halifax, but Clark, says it's too early to tell if the same individuals are responsible.

"People are just too brave here lately, " said Gene's Orange Market employee Jane Elliott.

Employees at the store believe the criminals knew the store would be closed when they made their move. Now, they are left to pick up the pieces and hope that the two people involved are caught.

"They don't realize the destruction and they put some employees out of a job for awhile until it gets fixed. It's a mess, " said employee Jennifer Barksdale.

South Boston police are handling the investigation into the Jiffy store crimes and that investigation is ongoing.
